Deon van Zyl is a Clinical Psychologist in private practice and has 25 years of experience as a Management Development Consultant within a wide range of organizations. He was an Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Pretoria, where he lectured and practiced for 13 years. He is also past chairperson of the South African Institute for Clinical Psychology. He obtained his B A (Hons) and M A (Clinical Psychology) degrees Cum Laude at the Rand Afrikaans University (now University of Johannesburg), and his D Phil degree at the University of Pretoria. He has 46 scientific and popular publications to his name, both nationally and overseas, including book chapters, and has written 39 customized training programs for client companies. He has received two Academic Merit awards from the Human Sciences Research Council, and a HSRC research award for the “Psychological Influences on Human Immune Responses”, showing the relationship between stress and the body’s immune systems. He spent a year in the U S A on a post-doctoral grant from the Ernest Oppenheimer Memorial Trust.
Deon is a member of the International Association for Jungian Studies, the African representative of the International Association for the Study of Dreams, and registered as a Clinical Psychologist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).
Deon has also been involved in large change projects within South Africa. In the political arena pre-1994, he was involved in a project to match and mirror the macro negotiations between the political stakeholders, on a grassroots level within communities. He mediated and facilitated joint problem-solving sessions, planning and negotiations amongst all relevant stakeholders, specifically in education, in preparation for the 1994 transition. He completed two summer intensive continuing education study programmes at the C G Jung Institute and the International School for Analytical Psychology, Zurich Switzerland. Recently he delivered papers at international conferences in Kyoto, Japan, Chicago and Asheville, U.S.A. He does regular lectures for the C G Jung Centers in Johannesburg and Cape Town. He has co-presented 14 Television programs with Katinka Heyns on DSTV KykNet called “Bloudruk” about the triumph of the human spirit through pain and suffering, and also presented 12 weekly inserts on the SuperSport Golf program Pitch and Putter on “Golf and the Mind”.
He has delivered lectures, papers, workshops and training seminars countrywide in South Africa, in the USA and Japan, and has facilitated numerous sessions and processes in a wide variety of industries and organizations. He also explores the interface between psychology and spiritual practices.
